Tebboune strengthens anti-drug measures with new prison and specialized agency
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune chaired a meeting of the Supreme Security Council, addressing wildfires, anti-drug efforts, and the general situation in Algeria and neighboring countries. The presidency announced two key decisions to combat drug trafficking. First, a specialized security agency will be created to exclusively fight drug trafficking, drawing inspiration from international models like the United States. Second, a military barracks in Tanezrouft, located in the Grand Sud, will be converted into a high-security prison. This facility will house drug lords and traffickers, aiming to isolate major criminal networks. The council also reviewed ongoing security and scientific investigations into the wildfires, led by the National Gendarmerie and National Security. The presidential communiqué stated that the Supreme Security Council called for the effective application of the death penalty for all crimes related to such criminal offenses. The meeting concluded with an examination of the country's general situation and developments in neighboring countries, signaling a firm commitment to strengthening the fight against organized drug-related crime.
