Sonatrach and Eni sign new strategic agreement for decarbonization
Algerian national oil company Sonatrach and Italian energy giant Eni have signed a letter of intent in Algiers to accelerate the reduction of the hydrocarbon industry's carbon footprint in Algeria. This agreement aims to adapt Algerian oil and gas operations to global standards, focusing on projects that significantly mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane. This initiative builds on a 2023 technological partnership between the two groups, which involved energy use diagnostics, regular controls, engineering expertise, personnel training, and field interventions to identify decarbonization potential. These joint efforts have already led to the implementation of leak detection and repair programs in co-operated fields, reducing unintentional gas losses. Precise emission inventories have also been established at six strategic sites. The new agreement will expand their collaboration to include modernizing oil infrastructure to limit gas flaring and improve overall energy efficiency. They also plan to explore geological carbon dioxide storage using CCUS technologies and implement natural CO2 sequestration through the creation and management of dedicated forest areas. Eni, a global energy operator with expertise across the energy chain, will contribute its circular economy know-how and clean technologies to support Sonatrach's transition towards sustainable production.
