Pan African Clergy Council petitions Interior Minister over alleged assault of cleric in police custody
The Pan African Clergy Council and Bible Seminary has formally petitioned the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, requesting a full, impartial, and transparent investigation into the alleged assault of a Christian cleric while in police custody. In their petition, dated August 18, 2026, the Council emphasized that individuals in state custody should not be subjected to assault, intimidation, or humiliation, as their safety and rights become an institutional responsibility. They called for the investigation and potential prosecution of the police officers on duty and the Muslim individual alleged to have committed the assault, in accordance with Ghanaian law. The Council stressed that accountability should not be replaced by reconciliation ceremonies and urged the Ministry to ensure that all culpable parties, regardless of religious affiliation or influence, face legal consequences. They also requested to be kept informed of the investigation's progress and outcome. The Council noted an explanation regarding a controversial assertion attributed to an Islamic cleric, stating it was based on his understanding of the Quran, not personally originated. The Council affirmed that no religious leader should be above the law and disclosed that they had counseled the Christian cleric against engaging in insulting or provocative apologetic engagements towards Islam or any other religion. They highlighted that religious disagreement should not lead to threats or violence,
