Former Minister Mansour Faye supports National Assembly dissolution amid institutional tensions
Former Minister Mansour Faye has publicly supported President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in his institutional conflict with the Pastef parliamentary majority. Faye urged the President to assert his full institutional authority, stating that he was elected as President and not to be influenced or overshadowed. This intervention comes amidst growing distance between President Faye and his former mentor, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, and discussions around a constitutional referendum and tensions concerning the National Assembly. Mansour Faye suggested that the current parliamentary majority no longer ensures the country's stability and advocated for the dissolution of the National Assembly and new elections, rather than a referendum on Article 37 of the Constitution. He argued that political clarification through new elections is the priority, allowing President Faye to seek a new parliamentary majority. This stance aligns with those who believe elections offer a clearer path forward than a potentially riskier referendum, especially given the current lack of cohesion within the parliamentary majority following the apparent rift between the President and his former Prime Minister.
