Zimbabwe's co-operatives: unlocking their full economic potential

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has identified micro, small and medium enterprises MSMEs and co-operatives as crucial for Zimbabwe's economy and the Vision 2030 agenda, noting their contribution of over 60% to the country's gross domestic product and employment for millions. Zimbabwe has a strong foundation, with housing co-operatives delivering around 210,000 units since 2010, 1,380 Savings and Credit Co-operative Organisations SACCOs, and 961 agricultural co-operatives. The government has demonstrated commitment through the National Cooperative Societies Development Policy, approved in December 2025 and launched in July 2026, and is reviewing the National Co-operatives Act to emphasize governance, transparency, and digitalization.
