African Medicines Agency aims to streamline pharmaceutical regulation for market access
The African Medicines Agency AMA seeks to simplify the process for pharmaceutical manufacturers to access multiple African markets, addressing the fragmentation that currently exists due to differing national regulatory requirements. Delese Mimi Darko, Director-General of the AMA, highlights that this fragmentation leads to increased costs, time, and resource consumption for manufacturers, ultimately delaying patient access to quality-assured medical products. The AMA's role is to connect and strengthen National Regulatory Authorities NRAs, building on existing harmonization efforts and fostering greater confidence among countries to rely on each other's work. The goal is to reduce unnecessary duplication, increase predictability, and accelerate access to medical products, without replacing national sovereignty or NRAs. The AMA also plans to launch a Regulatory Innovation and Manufacturing Readiness Hub, an "Africa's front door" for innovators and manufacturers to engage with the AMA and NRAs early in product development. This early engagement aims to help developers understand expectations, generate necessary evidence, and make informed investment decisions. The initiative is crucial for building a sustainable pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in Africa, supporting the African Continental Free Trade Area AfCFTA, and enabling African countries to jointly procure quality-assured products. This effort is seen as both a public health and economic imperative for a continent h
