Zambezi region reports 11 child deaths from diarrhea, investigations underway

The region has reported 1,146 diarrhea cases in epidemiological week 31 of 2026, with 722 cases involving children under five. Of the 66 admissions during this period, 58 were children under five. The cause of the elevated cases is currently unknown, and investigations are ongoing.

Most cases were reported at Ngweze Clinic, Katima Mulilo Hospital, Mavuluma Clinic, Masokotwane Clinic, Lisikili Clinic, and Katima Clinic. The ministry has implemented measures such as health education on diarrhea prevention, safe water use, and handwashing. Parents and guardians are encouraged to practice basic hygiene, use safe water, and seek early medical attention for children with diarrhea.

Weekly radio talks are also being conducted on prevention, treatment, and the importance of oral rehydration and hygiene. Luvindao assured the community of continuous availability of oral rehydration solutions, zinc tablets, and the rotavirus vaccine. Nutritionist Dr. Matheus Hamukwaya suggested water and food contamination, hygiene issues, and malnutrition as potential factors, emphasizing the fragility of young children to bacteria and the importance of boiled water, thoroughly cooked food, clean utensils, and breastfeeding.
