Nick Kyrgios suspended after positive cocaine test
Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has received a provisional suspension following a positive test for cocaine. The International Tennis Integrity Agency announced on Wednesday that the test was conducted during the ATP 250 Mallorca tournament last June. An accredited World Anti-Doping Agency laboratory confirmed the presence of benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite, in the 31-year-old player's sample. The suspension became effective on August 4, and the 2022 Wimbledon finalist has not yet appealed the sanction. Kyrgios, a former world number 13, publicly acknowledged an "enormous error" on his social media, expressing deep regret and apologizing to his audience, family, and sponsors. He also cited numerous injuries over recent years that "greatly affected him both physically and mentally," a difficult period during which his ATP ranking dropped to 919th.
