
Dr. Borlli Michel Jonas Somé: a key figure in Burkina Faso's digital transformation and AI development
Dr. Borlli Michel Jonas Somé, a lecturer in computer science and a specialist in databases, information systems, and artificial intelligence applied to African languages and digital health, has dedicated over two decades to training engineers and advancing scientific knowledge in Burkina Faso. His academic career began with a passion for exact sciences, leading him to pursue studies in Morocco, where he earned a license in computer science, a Diploma of Advanced Studies in computer networks, and a doctorate in applied sciences with a specialization in computer science from Mohammed V University in Rabat. Since October 2005, Dr. Somé has been a permanent lecturer-researcher at the Higher School of Computer Science ESI of Nazi BONI University, where he teaches various computer science subjects and has contributed to training numerous generations of IT professionals. He also served as Deputy Director of ESI from 2009 to 2013 and then as Director from September 2023 to April 2025, focusing on enhancing training quality and expanding research into AI and data science. His research is particularly notable for its focus on African realities, including the automatic processing of African natural languages, emotion recognition in Mooré, and the development of AI applications for digital health, such as malaria diagnosis and mobile technologies for health literacy in disadvantaged areas.
