
Financial Crimes Commission launches high-profile political probes with cases before Supreme Court
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions DPP has referred three investigation files from the Financial Crimes Commission FCC to the Financial Crimes Division FCD of the Supreme Court for criminal trials. These cases involve five prominent individuals, including former Attorney General and MSM Secretary General Maneesh Gobin, former Parliamentary Private Secretary Rajanah Dhaliah, and former Economic Development Board EDB CEO Ken Poonoosamy. Additionally, former Assistant Commissioner of Police Lilram Deal faces six charges related to alleged money laundering. The cases are among the first to be heard by the FCD, established by an amendment to the Courts Act in April. Maneesh Gobin is accused of misusing his position for personal gain in the "Black Label and Stag Party" case, involving a land lease. Rajanah Dhaliah and Hurryduth Ramnarain also face charges in this case, related to soliciting gratification for influence. Lilram Deal's charges stem from alleged misuse of "Reward Money" intended for informants, with funds reportedly credited to his personal account and used for a vehicle purchase. Ken Poonoosamy is accused of using his office for gratification in connection with a financing request from the Mauritius Investment Corporation MIC for the acquisition of the former Ambre hotel.
