Femi Kuti attributes Nigeria's challenges to institutional corruption, not President Tinubu
Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti stated that President Bola Tinubu is not Nigeria's primary problem, instead identifying deeply entrenched institutional corruption as the root cause of the country's issues. Speaking on the Good News Naija podcast, Kuti argued that the judiciary and other accountability institutions should be held responsible for allowing leaders accused of corruption to emerge. He questioned how Tinubu was able to contest the presidency if allegations against him were true, suggesting that a judicial system with integrity would have prevented it. Kuti highlighted the pervasive nature of corruption across Nigeria's political and leadership institutions, noting that members of the elite often maintain connections despite political differences. He referenced former President Olusegun Obasanjo's anti-corruption campaign and the establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, recalling the removal of its pioneer chairman, Nuhu Ribadu. Kuti pointed out that Ribadu now serves as Tinubu's security personnel, illustrating his view that the same individuals are interconnected within the system. He expressed concern that this situation could erode young Nigerians' confidence in the country and its institutions, emphasizing that strengthening institutions and ensuring accountability for those in authority are crucial for addressing Nigeria's problems.
