
IGP deploys reinforcement team to New Winneba following violent incident
The Inspector-General of Police has deployed a reinforcement team from the National Police Headquarters to New Winneba in the Central Region after a violent shooting incident. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, has resulted in at least three fatalities and approximately 15 injuries. An estimated 300-member mob, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze, entered New Winneba armed with guns, stones, cutlasses, and sticks, attacking residents, shops, and properties. A police officer was among the injured. The reinforcement includes two armored vehicles and additional personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols to contain the violence and prevent further escalation. The Police Service states the situation is currently under control, with security personnel remaining deployed, and further details will be provided as investigations continue.
