University of Lagos withdraws sexual harassment advisory after public backlash

The advisory, titled “Counselling Tips for Ladies to Avoid Sexual Harassment/Rape,” was circulated online and drew widespread criticism for allegedly placing the responsibility of preventing sexual harassment on women. Messages on the banner included advice such as “Do not dress to kill,” “Do not shake hands anyhow with any man,” and “Do not mingle carelessly with men.” In a statement, the university, through Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of its Communication Unit, acknowledged the advisory's origin but stated it did not represent the institution's values, position, or standards.

The university emphasized that it does not tolerate rape or sexual harassment, nor does it support victim-blaming or shaming, calling such actions “entirely unacceptable.” The statement reiterated the university's commitment to a safe, respectful, equitable, and inclusive environment and encouraged students to use official reporting structures for sexual harassment incidents.
