University of Lagos withdraws controversial anti-rape advisory after public outcry

The advisory, displayed on a banner by the Student Affairs Division, suggested measures like "Do not shake hands anyhow with any man" and "Do not dress to kill" to avoid sexual harassment and rape. This sparked public outrage, with many accusing the institution of victim-blaming. In a statement issued by Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of the Communication Unit, the university acknowledged producing the publication but stated it does not reflect its values, position, or standards.

The institution reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment, stating it does not condone rape, sexual harassment, or any form of victim-blaming. The university emphasized that placing responsibility on victims is unacceptable and contrary to its core values, describing sexual harassment as a serious misconduct that should never be trivialized. It encouraged students to use official, confidential reporting structures for investigation and support, reiterating its commitment to a safe and inclusive learning environment.

The university has previously faced cases of alleged sexual assault involving its community members.
