GECOL investigates suspected sabotage and explosion at power substations
The General Electricity Company of Libya GECOL has initiated a comprehensive investigation, in collaboration with relevant authorities, into suspected sabotage at several power substations. This follows significant damage, including an explosion at substation 16 in Sug Il Juma. GECOL warns that tampering with the electricity grid poses a direct threat to its stability and public safety, potentially leading to a total blackout. The company highlighted an incident at the Sug Il Juma substation where personnel were forcibly removed and the station was shut down, causing automatic line disconnections. Restoration only occurred after security forces intervened. A transformer on Route 16 also caught fire, demonstrating the risks of independent power restoration attempts. GECOL emphasizes that restoring electricity is a precise technical process and urges the public to avoid electrical installations and refrain from interfering with operations to prevent widespread blackouts or grid collapse. The company is working continuously to maintain grid stability.
