
US pledges support for Namibia's oil sector development
The United States has expressed its commitment to helping Namibia transform its oil resources into long-term prosperity. US ambassador to Namibia John Giordano stated that American companies possess the technical expertise and experience required to produce oil from Namibia's challenging geological formations, which demands significant upfront investments. US oilfield service and technology companies such as Baker Hughes, Halliburton, SLB, and ABS are already active in Namibia, providing advanced technology and operational expertise. Giordano emphasized that economic development from oil potential relies on capital, infrastructure, and institutions. He highlighted the Port of Walvis Bay's role in connecting Namibia's energy resources to global markets and supporting southern Africa's resource potential. The US is actively involved through commercial diplomacy and economic statecraft to support infrastructure corridors, citing the Lobito Corridor as an example of US-backed integrated corridor investment. The ambassador also noted that the US offers substantial funding through the Export-Import Bank, the US International Development Finance Corporation, and the US Trade and Development Agency for energy and critical mineral projects in countries like Namibia.
