
African Democratic Congress criticizes Tinubu government over rising food inflation
The African Democratic Congress ADC has accused the President Bola Tinubu-led government of lacking solutions to the increasing cost of food, stating that the government's focus on moderating headline inflation does not reflect the economic reality for many Nigerians. The opposition party highlighted that while headline inflation marginally decreased from 15.91 percent in June to 15.43 percent in July, food inflation rose from 17.52 percent to 20.31 percent year-on-year during the same period. On a month-on-month basis, food inflation also increased from 3.75 percent in June to 5.56 percent in July. The ADC, through its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, urged the government to prioritize the actual prices Nigerians pay for food over headline inflation figures. The party contended that the Tinubu administration's current economic approach has failed to provide relief to citizens and called for an honest admission of this failure. The ADC also linked the food crisis to broader concerns of food insecurity and malnutrition, citing a Food and Agriculture Organisation report indicating that 35 million Nigerians face acute food insecurity.
