Uefa's legal action against Fifa president Gianni Infantino described as 'massive escalation

Uefa, European football's governing body, had previously urged Infantino to resign over his abandoned plan to introduce private investment into the World Cup. While Uefa provisionally withdrew its threat to boycott Fifa tournaments, it announced it is "considering legal action arising out of and in connection with the FFE plan proposed by Fifa." Legal documents drawn up by Uefa's US-based lawyers indicate plans to bring criminal claims in Switzerland against Infantino and potentially other Fifa officials and advisors for criminal mismanagement.

Michael Payne, former head of marketing at the IOC, stated that no member federation has undertaken such a move against a governing body in over a century, suggesting it could be devastating for Infantino. Terrence Burns, a brand and marketing strategist, believes this legal route is a more effective weapon than a boycott, as it targets Infantino personally and keeps the issue alive on a timeline Fifa cannot control, potentially impacting his re-election bid in March. Despite criticism, Infantino has remained in his position, with Burns suggesting that time is on his side and he has built a strong base of support among federations for re-election.
