Mali faces controversy over female genital mutilation as health professionals highlight severe consequences
A significant controversy regarding female genital mutilation FGM is unfolding on social media in Mali, following statements from several public figures defending the practice to preserve the chastity of young girls. These discussions have drawn considerable reactions across the sub-region, particularly from health professionals who condemn the medical and human consequences of FGM. Among the most vocal critics is Professor Charlemagne Ou茅draogo, a gynecologist-obstetrician and former Minister of Health of Burkina Faso. Professor Ou茅draogo shared a dramatic case from his career, describing a patient whose vaginal scars, resulting from FGM, obstructed childbirth. During labor, the baby caused severe tears to the perineum and rectum, eventually exiting through the anus. Professor Ou茅draogo emphasized that this case exemplifies the serious long-term effects of FGM, including its impact on women's sexual and reproductive health. He warned that FGM is a risk factor for maternal mortality and can lead to numerous sexual dysfunctions.
