France increases monthly financial requirement for non-EU students to 877.50 euros
France has significantly increased the minimum monthly financial requirement for non-European Union students to obtain or renew a residence permit, effective August 1, 2026. The new threshold rises from 615 euros to 877.50 euros, representing a more than 42% increase. This change means students must now demonstrate access to over 575,600 CFA francs monthly. The measure applies to all students from outside the EU, European Economic Area, and Switzerland, affecting both initial applications and annual renewals. The Association of Senegalese Students in France Aesf is raising awareness about these new regulations and advising students and parents to be vigilant. The Aesf emphasizes that financial resources must be stable, regular, and sufficient to cover all student needs throughout the academic year. Acceptable proof of funds includes personal bank statements, official scholarships, financial support attestations from a solvent parent or guarantor, bank guarantees, or regular income such as salaries or rental income. Incomplete or irregular financial guarantees may lead to refusal of the residence permit and a requirement to leave French territory. This increased financial burden poses a significant challenge for Senegalese families, especially given rising living costs in French cities. Observers recommend anticipating administrative procedures and regularly checking account balances to avoid issues for the 2026 academic year.
