Namibia Breweries reaffirms N$2 million rugby sponsorship despite recent team setbacks
Namibia Breweries Limited NBL has announced a N$2 million sponsorship for the Namibian Rugby Union NRU, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to the sport despite recent challenges. This comes after the senior national team failed to qualify for the Rugby World Cup for the first time in 26 years, and the national under-20 side lost to Kenya, missing out on the 2027 World Rugby u20 Challenge. NBL managing director Waldemar von Lieres stated that their support remains unwavering because they believe in rugby's ability to unite Namibians and provide aspirations for young people. He acknowledged the difficult results but emphasized NBL's long-term commitment, stating that their backing helps the NRU maintain momentum and keep the sport visible as new players emerge. Von Lieres also expressed confidence in the NRU's leadership and direction, highlighting strengthened structures and transparency. The sponsorship will support major events on the 2026 calendar, including the Africa Sevens Tournament, along with responsible consumer engagement, match-day activations, venue branding, and media support. NBL has challenged the NRU to use this period to strengthen structures, develop talent, and build a squad for the 2031 Rugby World Cup. NRU chief executive John Heynes thanked NBL, noting that the Welwitschias are preparing for an important international program and that this period represents an opportunity for growth.
