Tunisia experiences record social unrest in July with over 1,100 protests

This figure represents a 27% rise from June 867 movements and a 168% increase from May 411 movements, confirming an intensifying trend of social discontent. The Tunisian Social Observatory, part of the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights FTDES, highlighted that unlike typical summer slowdowns, July's protests were largely driven by living conditions and access to essential services. Water cuts were the primary cause of protest, accounting for 373 movements, followed by electricity interruptions, which led to 305 movements.

Together, these two issues generated 678 mobilizations, over 60% of the total. While employment and working conditions still prompted 210 movements, their relative importance decreased as concerns shifted towards public services and daily life. All 24 governorates were affected, with Tunis leading with 166 movements, followed by Kairouan and Monastir 67 each.

Residents were the main participants, involved in 746 movements, followed by activists 85 and unemployed graduates 75. Social media played a crucial role, relaying approximately 670 protest movements. Public institutions, including ministries, delegations, municipalities, and governorates, especially those responsible for water and electricity, remained the primary targets of these demands.
