Trump signs decrees to curb birth tourism and modify birthright citizenship rules

This initiative follows a US Supreme Court decision that invalidated a previous decree by Trump to restrict birthright citizenship for children born in the US to undocumented parents. Trump stated that while the Supreme Court's decision was regrettable, his administration is making adjustments. The Court had concluded that children born in the US to "illegally or temporarily present" parents are "citizens by birth under the 14th Amendment" of the Constitution.

Stephen Miller, Deputy White House Chief of Staff and Homeland Security Advisor, stated that the first decree specifically targets commercial "birth tourism," which he described as one of the most serious abuses of US law. Miller also indicated that the US government is expanding the categories of individuals to whom birthright citizenship does not apply, including "members of terrorist organizations" and individuals "acting on behalf of foreign governments."
