Zliten opens EU-backed fish market and experimental laboratory
Zliten Municipality has announced the opening of a new fish market and an experimental laboratory for preserving and collecting fish. Located 160 km east of Tripoli, this initiative aims to support local fishermen and advance the fisheries sector. The project, part of the EU's REBUILD Pilot Action Fishery programme, seeks to enhance Libya's fish supply chain and contribute to economic diversification away from hydrocarbons. The facility will enable the conservation, refrigeration, commercialization, and delivery of fish, with a focus on establishing a comprehensive traceability system compliant with EU legislation for both local and international markets. The pilot project is coordinated by Italy's Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and implemented by the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics OGS. The new Zliten facility includes two refrigeration rooms, one freezing room, and one processing room, adhering to EU quality and traceability standards, with a daily processing and storage capacity of 500kg to 2 tons. The REBUILD program also extends training and projects to other Libyan municipalities, including Sirte, Benghazi, Tripoli, and Tobruk.
