Thirty dead, 22 injured in Conakry landfill collapse after heavy rains
Thirty people died and 22 were injured in Guinea on Sunday when a landfill collapsed in the suburbs of the capital, Conakry, following heavy rains. The incident occurred at 2:00 AM in the Dar es-Salam district, Gbessia commune, causing several homes to collapse. The government reported 6 serious injuries and 16 minor injuries, and stated that significant material and human resources have been mobilized to search for buried individuals, rescue victims, and recover bodies. These operations are ongoing. Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the site, and measures are being taken to provide medical care for the injured and assistance to those affected. Former Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo, a leading Guinean opposition figure, expressed dismay on Facebook, noting the tragedy occurred despite the landfill's announced closure for August 23. He called for a transparent investigation into the circumstances of the catastrophe. The government had recently announced eviction and security operations around the landfill due to landslide risks.
