UK arrests over 4,700 illegal workers in first half of 2026
United Kingdom Immigration Enforcement officers arrested more than 4,700 people working illegally in the country during the first six months of 2026, according to the Home Office. Official figures indicate 4,756 arrests were made between January and June, marking a 20 percent increase from the same period in 2025. Officers conducted 7,270 raids on businesses, a 31 percent year-on-year rise, as the country intensifies its efforts against illegal working. The Home Office described this period as the most successful six months in British history for illegal working enforcement. Since July 2024, over 17,000 illegal working arrests have been made, a 122 percent increase compared to the preceding two years. London recorded the highest number of arrests with 1,256, a 32 percent increase, followed by the West Midlands with 701, up 22 percent, and the South West with 693, up 44 percent. Employers in sectors such as beauty, retail, and hospitality have incurred 拢74 million in civil penalties this year. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that this surge in enforcement activity is the highest level in British history. The Home Office also announced increased penalties for companies hiring illegal workers, with fines up to 拢60,000 per illegal worker or five years in prison for employers in the gig economy from October 1.
