Tamale Teaching Hospital responds to patient's death during dialysis, initiates investigation

The hospital confirmed that it has established a multidisciplinary team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death and expects a report within one week. According to the hospital, Sumaila Amadu was scheduled for eight dialysis sessions in August and had completed four. His condition unexpectedly changed during the fifth session.

The hospital also acknowledged a power outage on the day of the incident, which occurred around 8:48 p.m. and was widespread. While the hospital's medical oxygen system is connected to electricity, it maintains standby oxygen cylinders and generators for backup during power interruptions. Due to patient confidentiality, the hospital stated it cannot disclose further details about the patient's medical condition or the exact circumstances of his death.

Management urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation is ongoing. This response follows accusations from a man, Salman Al Faris, who alleged on Facebook that his brother, Sumaila Amadu, died during a dialysis session due to a power outage, a non-functional standby power plant, and a lack of oxygen at the renal clinic.
