Over 56% of Ghanaians remain in poverty despite economic recovery, World Bank reports
Despite Ghana's recent economic recovery, a World Bank report indicates that 56.4% of the population continues to live in poverty, with increasing spatial disparities across the country. Robert R Taliercio, the World Bank Division Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, stated at the launch of the tenth Ghana Economic Update in Accra that strong economic growth has not translated into improved living conditions for many households. Ghana's economy grew by 6% in 2025 and accelerated to 6.4% in the first quarter of 2026. However, Taliercio warned that economic expansion alone cannot solve the nation's development challenges, especially as current growth is concentrated in sectors that create limited job opportunities. He noted a significant gap between high-level economic performance and the daily experiences of citizens, exacerbated by a rapidly growing youth population entering the job market. Taliercio emphasized that this structural imbalance requires immediate attention and urged the government to prioritize policies that foster job creation, enhance productivity, and ensure economic growth benefits all regions.
