SpaceX plans $100 billion space base in Louisiana for Starship launches

The new facility, named "Starbase, Louisiana," will be located in Vermilion Parish and is intended to host thousands of Starship rocket flights annually. This base, significantly larger than the current Starbase in Texas, will be situated on nearly 50,000 hectares at Pecan Island along Louisiana's southern coast. Construction is set to begin in 2027, with initial operations projected for 2030 and a first launch from Louisiana as early as 2029.

The site will support Earth orbit launches, including deploying data center satellites, and future missions to the Moon and Mars. The project is expected to create at least 3,000 direct jobs over 10 years, along with up to 10,000 indirect and construction jobs. SpaceX has committed to funding coastal erosion measures and providing annual financial compensation to local communities to offset the occupation of the wetland area.
