South Africa faces labor shortages after mass exodus of foreign workers

This exodus was prompted by anti-migrant demonstrations, some of which turned deadly, and increased scrutiny on undocumented immigrants. Over 160,000 individuals have reportedly left the country, with Zimbabwe reporting many of its citizens previously worked in South African agriculture, construction, and domestic services. Farmers in regions like Robertson and KwaZulu-Natal are struggling to find workers for tasks such as harvesting citrus fruits, pruning vineyards, and cutting sugarcane.

One farmer in KwaZulu-Natal reported losing up to 80% of his sugarcane cutters almost overnight, expressing concerns about the viability of sugar mills. Another farmer near Mid-Illovo noted that local South Africans often avoid strenuous agricultural jobs, which are typically filled by workers from neighboring countries like Lesotho. Anti-migrant groups and unions, however, dispute the claim that South Africans are unwilling to do these jobs.
