Ghana Parliament approves three Supreme Court nominees, including ECOWAS Court President and former GBA President
On August 27, 2026, the Parliament of Ghana approved President John Dramani Mahama's Supreme Court nominees: Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, and Anthony Forson. Justice Edward Amoako Asante, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, previously served two terms as President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice. He began his judicial career as a Circuit Court Judge in October 2002, rising to the High Court in March 2008, and was sworn in as a Justice of the Court of Appeal in August 2020 by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah, also a Justice of the Court of Appeal, has over three decades of legal and judicial experience, having served as an Assistant State Attorney, Senior Legal Counsel at Volta River Authority, and Legal Services Manager at Tema Oil Refinery before being appointed a High Court judge in July 2011 and a Justice of the Court of Appeal in December 2019. Anthony Forson, a senior legal practitioner, has not served on the bench but has over two decades of experience in private practice and was formerly President of the Ghana Bar Association, representing the legal profession on the Judicial Council.
