SIU authorized to sell R11 million Ferrari linked to Tembisa Hospital corruption probe

The proceeds from the sale will be held in an interest-bearing account. This decision is part of the Special Investigating Unit's SIU R2 billion corruption investigation at Tembisa Hospital and the Gauteng Department of Health. The Maumela Family Trust and Maumela himself opposed the sale, arguing the car was an appreciating asset.

However, Special Tribunal President Judge Bernard Ngoepe ruled that ongoing costs, including R5,000 monthly storage, R8,333 insurance premiums, a R104,857 battery replacement, and R408,000 for warranty renewal, justified the sale. The SIU's investigation, prompted by slain whistle-blower Babita Deokaran, alleges that Maumela extracted over R820 million from the hospital through a network of companies. A forensic review confirmed that 14 entities tied to Maumela unlawfully secured contracts worth over R400 million between 2019 and 2022, involving manipulated bidding and payments diverted to extravagant lifestyles.

SIU Acting Head Leonard Lekgetho welcomed the ruling, emphasizing its role in protecting assets under preservation orders and ensuring their value is maintained for the state and the people of South Africa.
