Singapore to provide nearly $70,000 in government support for every child

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced the $62,000 SG Child Support Package during his National Day Rally speech on August 23. This package includes a $10,000 Baby Gift in cash, $32,000 in Child Credits, a $5,000 Child Development Account First Step Grant, up to $5,000 in government CDA co-matching contributions, and a $10,000 top-up to the child’s Post-Secondary Education Account. When combined with existing benefits, such as the $5,000 MediSave Grant for Newborns and annual Edusave contributions, the total direct financial support will reach approximately $70,000.

This represents an increase from the current $27,500 to $56,500. More than 610,000 children across 380,000 households are expected to benefit. The new system aims to simplify the existing family support structure, which previously varied based on birth order, ensuring every child receives the same level of support throughout their upbringing.

The $10,000 Baby Gift will be paid in two installments within 12 months of birth, and the $32,000 Child Credits will provide $2,000 annually from age one until age 16. The CDA will remain open until the child turns 16, and a $10,000 PSEA top-up will be provided at age 17 for higher education costs.
