Kalidou Koulibaly's controversial handball leads to penalty in Al-Hilal's 5-1 victory
During a Saudi Pro League match between Al-Khaleej and Al-Hilal, Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly was involved in an unusual incident that resulted in a penalty for Al-Khaleej. Despite Al-Hilal's dominant 5-1 win, the situation highlighted complexities in football's handball rules. Koulibaly, inside his own penalty area, intervened on the ball with his hands after a goal kick had already been taken and the ball was in play. According to IFAB's Law 12, a field player commits a foul by deliberately touching the ball with their hand or arm, and if this occurs in their own penalty area, it results in a penalty. Law 14 further clarifies that a penalty is awarded for an offense normally punishable by a direct free kick within one's own area. Although the situation appeared bizarre, the decision to award a penalty was legally consistent, as a defender cannot handle the ball once it is in play, unlike a goalkeeper. Musa Barrow subsequently missed the penalty for Al-Khaleej.
