Justice Ministry responds to Ousmane Sonko on parliamentary inquiry commissions
During the opening of the first extraordinary session of the 2026-2027 legislative year on Monday, August 10, the President of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, addressed potential criticisms regarding the legality of six parliamentary inquiry commissions on the agenda. He emphasized the legal framework stating that the National Assembly cannot open a parliamentary commission on a case currently in court. Sonko confirmed that he personally verified this compliance with the Minister of Justice. He stated that the Minister of Justice responded last week, confirming that, out of five cases, none had ongoing judicial proceedings, except for one concerning land around the former Dakar airport. The session's agenda, limited to fifteen days by organic law no. 2025-11 of August 18, 2025, includes the review of eleven texts: two proposed laws, three draft laws, and six requests for the creation of parliamentary inquiry commissions. The subjects covered include land management around the former Dakar airport, the "One student, one computer" program, revenue shortfalls and tax exemptions, and the conditions for issuing fishing licenses.
