SDP commends security forces for rescuing Oyo pupils, mourns slain Army officer

The Social Democratic Party SDP on Monday praised Nigerian security forces for rescuing abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, highlighting the operation's professionalism and inter-agency collaboration. The party also mourned the death of 28-year-old Army officer Lt. Felix Isaac, who was killed during the rescue. In a statement by National Publicity Secretary Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP noted the victims were freed after over 56 days in captivity, describing the intelligence-led joint military operation as a display of "unity of purpose, impeccable professionalism and gallantry." Aiyenigba, however, called the abduction a national embarrassment, emphasizing the government's constitutional duty to ensure citizen security. The SDP celebrated the safe reunion of the 44 rescued schoolchildren and teachers with their families but expressed sadness over Lt. Isaac's sacrifice. The party urged the Federal Government to address poverty, hunger, and social injustice as root causes of insecurity, hoping democracy would improve protection of lives and property. This commendation followed Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde's gratitude for the successful rescue.
