State considers pleas in Windhoek transgender murder case
The state is considering plea offers from Elias Nandomba, 20, and Mervin Beukes, 21, who are accused of the murder of a transgender woman in Windhoek two years ago. Deputy prosecutor general Antonia Verhoef informed Judge Philanda Christiaan during a pretrial appearance in the Windhoek High Court that discussions are ongoing regarding potential guilty pleas. Nandomba and Beukes face charges including murder, rape, violating a dead human body, and defeating or obstructing the course of justice. These charges relate to the killing of Christof Frederik, 30, in the Otjomuise area of Windhoek on May 2, 2024. The state alleges Frederik was stabbed multiple times after being encountered in an intoxicated state. It is also alleged that Nandomba and Beukes raped Frederik or assisted in the rape, and mutilated her private parts post-mortem. Furthermore, the state claims the accused attempted to hinder the police investigation by hiding evidence. Defence lawyers Mese Tjituri and Charles Beukes have submitted amended pleas from their clients for the state's consideration. Nandomba and Beukes remain in custody, with their next court appearance scheduled for September 29.
