Mauritius and Australia partner for enhanced search and rescue operations in the Indian Ocean
Mauritius and Australia have agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to coordinate search and rescue services. This agreement will involve Mauritius's Civil Aviation Department, Shipping Division, and National Coast Guard, partnering with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. The primary goal is to facilitate faster communication and resource sharing between the two countries during Search and Rescue SAR operations, which are initiated when vessels, aircraft, or individuals are in distress. The agreement will enable immediate information exchange, including presumed positions, last communications, trajectories, weather conditions, and resources already mobilized, in cases of missing vessels, aircraft, or distress beacon activations. It will also streamline requests for assistance during major operations, allowing Mauritius to seek Australian expertise, technical information, or resources when needed. Both countries can authorize the use of their facilities within the relevant search and rescue zones. Regular information exchange on available vessels, aircraft, equipment, coordination centers, and other mobilizable capabilities is planned, along with communication tests to ensure prompt contact during emergencies.
