Zimbabwe table tennis team achieves historic eight-match winning streak at Commonwealth Championships
Zimbabwe's table tennis team concluded their debut at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships with an unprecedented eight-match winning streak, marking the country's best performance in the sport at the event. The Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union ZTTU reported that the team finished 18th overall at the 22nd edition of the championships in New Delhi, India. The men's team secured a 3-0 victory against the Falkland Islands, with strong performances from Tapiwa Musarurwa, Vikram Singh, and Brian Chamboko. Chamboko notably achieved an 11-0 game, and Singh forced India to call a timeout after scoring eight points in a single game. The women's doubles pair, Vongai Zhwakim and Naama Boterere, also registered competitive single-game scores against higher-ranked opponents. ZTTU attributed much of the team's success to head coach Liping Wang of China, who developed match-specific tactics by studying opponents and observing training sessions. Wang's strategic timeouts also proved crucial, as seen when Tatenda Mumvuma recovered to win a game after a tactical adjustment. The campaign was also marked by players competing despite injuries and illness, including Captain Singh with a knee injury, Mumvuma with a severe cold, and Zhwakim with a fever. ZTTU president Noah Ferenando was also credited for securing Zimbabwe's qualification despite recently undergoing surgery. International referee Robin Chigede officiated multiple matches daily during the championships.
