Oncorad Group publishes Africa's first study on robotic surgery
Oncorad Group has published the first African scientific study on robotic surgery, detailing results from 134 patients operated on using the Toumai robotic system at Littoral Clinic Ain Diab Casablanca. The study, published on July 20, 2026, in the Journal of Robotic Surgery, represents the largest African scientific study published in an indexed international scientific journal. In May 2024, Dr. Youness Ahallal and the team at Littoral Clinic Ain Diab Casablanca performed the first robotic surgery in Africa outside of South Africa, and the first worldwide intervention using the Toumai surgical robot outside of China. Since then, over 300 robot-assisted radical prostatectomies have been conducted at the facility. The study reports on the first year of the program, involving 134 patients with an average age of 67. Results show limited blood loss, averaging 66 mL, no deaths, and an average hospital stay of 1.4 days. Oncologically, the positive surgical margin rate was 11%. Functional recovery is also encouraging, with urinary continence reaching 88% at one year, comparable to results from established robotic platforms globally.
