US and Namibia discuss nuclear energy and critical minerals cooperation
A senior US delegation, led by US ambassador to Namibia John Giordano and deputy under secretary of energy Mike Kopp, visited Namibia to discuss cooperation in energy, uranium, critical minerals, and infrastructure. The discussions included Namibia鈥檚 civil nuclear ambitions and the potential future use of American small modular reactors and microreactor technologies to meet the country's growing electricity needs. While no agreement on nuclear technology deployment was announced, the visit aimed to reinforce opportunities for partnership in energy access and security, critical minerals supply chains, and advancing civil nuclear energy. Namibia, the world鈥檚 third-largest uranium producer, is seeking to expand domestic electricity generation. The US delegation also engaged with the Namibia Power Corporation on strengthening the national electricity grid and explored potential support for infrastructure projects in mineral processing. Additionally, the delegation met with leaders from Rhino Resources, Shell, and the Namibian Petroleum Operators Association regarding Namibia's offshore oil and gas industry.
