Professor Kwasi Prempeh warns against partisan MMDCE elections

Speaking on JoyNews, Professor Prempeh stated that the Constitution Review Committee deliberately recommended non-partisan MMDCE elections to maintain a focus on community development rather than national political rivalries. He argued that introducing political parties into local government elections would create a third nationwide partisan election, where campaigns would likely be dominated by the New Patriotic Party NPP and the National Democratic Congress NDC, diverting attention from local community needs. Professor Prempeh emphasized that the committee envisioned local elections as an opportunity for communities to concentrate on issues directly affecting them, such as sanitation and public service delivery, without partisan influence.

He believes that non-partisan district-level elections would ensure leaders are chosen based on their ability to address local problems rather than their political affiliations.
