President Tinubu criticizes Atiku Abubakar's fuel subsidy pledge as demonstrating ignorance
President Bola Tinubu stated that Atiku Abubakar's pledge to reinstate the petrol subsidy if elected in 2027 shows "serious ignorance" of governance and the economy. Tinubu made these remarks while receiving Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The President highlighted Nigeria's fiscal condition before the subsidy removal, noting that 27 states were unable to pay salaries. He argued that the reform directly benefits ordinary Nigerians by enabling state and local governments to fund basic obligations and infrastructure. Tinubu also advised Governor Adeleke to translate his re-election mandate into governance, promoting reconciliation, unity, peace, and stability, rather than triumphalism. He urged Adeleke to promote democracy, stability, and the rule of law, and to avoid stigmatizing opponents, emphasizing magnanimity in victory for all political actors.
