Unusual ground collapse spanning over one kilometer reported in Darou Mouhty area
An unusual ground collapse, extending for at least one kilometer, has occurred between the villages of Tawfekh and Khoundioul, near Darou Mouhty. The phenomenon, which has caused concern among residents, features gaping fissures and cracks, resembling the aftermath of an earthquake. The area is located near Tawfekh, the stronghold of the General Caliph of the Mourides, Serigne Sidy Makhtar. Images of the collapse have circulated widely on social media. Local authorities, including the mayor, the sub-prefect of Darou Mouhty, and technical services, visited the site to assess the situation. Geological hypotheses suggest the collapse is likely due to groundwater activity rather than a classic seismic event. Specialists propose several possibilities: a karstic phenomenon involving the collapse of a subterranean cavity roof, internal soil erosion known as "piping" where groundwater creates voids, or a shrink-swell phenomenon common in Sahelian clay soils caused by alternating wet and dry seasons. The presence of soft sand in some areas, indicative of a shallow water table, further supports a hydrogeological origin. Mayor Madiop Bit猫ye and the sub-prefect of Darou Mouhty have informed state authorities and are taking measures to secure the area, which is used for grazing, to prevent danger to both livestock and people. They have urged the public to remain calm, avoid the affected zone, and have requested village chiefs to raise awareness, especially among children, due to curiosity
