On August 17, 2026, 82 Malian Armed Forces soldiers, who had been held hostage since April 25 by terrorist groups affiliated with the JNIM/FLA coalition, were received by the President of the Republic, General of the Army Assimi Goïta, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Colonel Adama Bakayoko, spokesperson for the former hostages, thanked President Goïta and his collaborators for their efforts in securing their release. He also acknowledged the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces and the Minister Delegate for their guidance and provisions upon their return. Colonel Bakayoko affirmed, on behalf of his comrades, their readiness to rejoin the fight alongside the Malian army, emphasizing that no part of the national territory would be surrendered. He urged the population to support the army in its struggle for Mali's sovereignty. The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Major General Élisée Jean Dao, highlighted the nation's support during their ordeal and praised their resilience and bravery. He clarified that no negotiations were held with the enemy, but conditions were created to make their detention untenable for the captors, an effort initiated by the head of state. Major General Oumar Diarra, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Defense and Veterans, stated that the meeting aimed to present the soldiers to the President and allow them to reaffirm their commitment. He commended their bravery and dignity, reiterating the authorities' determination to leave no soldier behind
