Botswana regulators collaborate to combat illicit fuel trade losses
The Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority BERA and the Botswana Unified Revenue Service BURS have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on curbing the illicit fuel trade. This partnership aims to address an estimated P4 billion in annual revenue losses. Investigations reveal that undeclared and illicit fuel is being smuggled into the country, bypassing quality checks and taxes. This practice poses risks to motorists, deprives the national budget of revenue, and creates unfair competition for legitimate fuel companies.
