US personnel withdrawal will not affect Nigeria's counterterrorism cooperation, says DHQ
The Defence Headquarters has clarified that the reported withdrawal of approximately 200 United States personnel from Nigeria is a routine adjustment and will not impact the country's security cooperation with the US. Major General S. Uba, Director of Defence Information, stated on Tuesday that the withdrawal is part of the evolving nature of their engagement, tied to specific operational and counterterrorism objectives. He emphasized that the Nigeria-US security partnership remains strong, enduring, and mutually beneficial, with intelligence cooperation, training, and information sharing continuing. Uba stressed that the primary responsibility for Nigeria's defense rests with Nigerian security forces, and cooperation with the US aims to strengthen these capabilities. He urged the media and public not to interpret the adjustment as a weakening of security cooperation or Nigeria's defense capacity, noting that the partnership has yielded positive results against terrorism.
