Nudo MP demands probe into power utility electrocution deaths
National Unity Democratic Organisation member of parliament Vetaruhe Kandorozu has called for an independent audit and investigation into fatal electrocution incidents in the electricity sector, citing serious safety failures. This follows the death of Central North Regional Electricity Distributor Cenored technician Desmond Ujaha on July 30, and another colleague being critically injured. Kandorozu expressed condolences to the families of deceased workers, noting that the latest Cenored fatality occurred about a year after a similar tragedy at the Northern Regional Electricity Distributor Nored. He highlighted shortcomings in occupational safety standards, stating that Nored has recorded seven electrocution-related fatalities since June 2024, with six members of the public also injured. Kandorozu claims eight fatalities have occurred in the electricity sector over the past four years, with a sharp increase in 2023. He also mentioned the deaths of two Namibia Water Corporation employees who were electrocuted. He urged Cenored to complete an investigation and submit findings to the Electricity Control Board, Ministry of Justice, and Ministry of Labour, and called on regulators to conduct comprehensive safety audits, make findings public, and institute disciplinary action for negligence.
