Senegalese delegation visits Guinea-Bissau to present mediation plan
A Senegalese delegation led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Cheikh Niang visited Bissau to present a new mediation plan to the transitional authorities. This plan emerged from the ECOWAS heads of state summit, where Senegal was appointed as the mediator in the crisis. Minister Niang stated that the purpose of the visit was to present the mediation plan and agree on its terms with the transitional authorities. Following a meeting with Guinea-Bissau's transitional president, General Horta N'Tam, Niang indicated that fruitful discussions took place and the mediation, which will unfold in several phases until the end of the electoral process, is expected to begin in the coming weeks. The Senegalese Minister of Defense, Yankoba Diémé, accompanied Niang. ECOWAS officially designated Senegal as the mediator to lead dialogue in Guinea-Bissau at its recent Freetown summit in July. This decision aims to pacify the political transition and restore constitutional order after the coup that overthrew outgoing President Umaro Sissoco Embalo on November 26, 2025. After deposing President Embalo, the army suspended the electoral process and announced it would take control of the West African country for one year.
