Ousmane Sonko clarifies political stance, denies opposition role after leaving Prime Minister post

Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, clarified his current political position in an interview with the French daily Le Monde. He stated that he does not consider himself an opponent of the government and has no intention of obstructing the functioning of state institutions. Sonko, leader of Pastef, declared, "I am not in the opposition, I have said it, I will not play at blocking institutions," ending speculation about his stance since his departure from the Prime Minister's office. While rejecting the label of an opponent, Sonko fully embraces the responsibilities of his current position, emphasizing that he now holds a position of power and intends to ensure the National Assembly fully exercises its constitutional prerogatives. This statement comes amid institutional tensions surrounding the constitutional review process, with the National Assembly initiating the second phase of the parliamentary process on June 20. Regarding his relationship with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who relieved him of his duties as Prime Minister, Sonko expressed serenity, downplaying comments about a rift between them. He concluded by stating that "turbulence is part of the journey for any politician."
